Female Hair Loss Causes
A woman's body goes through many changes throughout her entire course of life. These changes, especially hormonal changes, can sometimes be a contributing factor to hair loss. In women, just as in men, the most common type of hair loss, or alopecia, is hereditary thinning. In women, the pattern of hereditary thinning is different than in men; it is referred to as female pattern thinning, opposed to pattern baldness. In order to properly treat this problem, you must first figure out the cause.
The top 10 reasons for hair loss in females:
- Bad hair etiquette - Excessive use of hairstyling tools such as curling irons or hot hair dryers can aid with hair loss. Hair products such as sprays, gels, perms, relaxers or hair dye can damage the hair shaft and prolonged usage can hamper its growth. Tight ponytails, braids or brushing your hair too hard can further aggravate the condition.
- PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition where male hormones, or androgens, are secreted in excess and form small fluid-like sacs in the ovaries which are known as cysts. It is due to hormonal imbalances in your body which negatively affects your hair growth as well. While you may notice more hair growth on your body, it can trigger hair loss from your scalp.
- Anemia - This condition is a result of low iron intake in one's diet and may also be caused by heavy menstruation or inadequate folic acid. The resulting factor of anemia is a low production of hemoglobin which means less oxygen to your organs. When oxygen does not reach your hair follicles, they tend to weaken and break easily.
- Menopause - A lot of changes take place in a woman's body once she hits menopause and one of them is hair loss. This is because estrogen hormone levels are much lower in the body during menopause and thereafter. After menopause, about 40% of women experience hair thinning, which is almost the same rate as men in that same age bracket of 48-55 years.
- Labor - Many women experience hair loss after delivery of their infant. There is a rise of the hormone estrogen during pregnancy which increases hair growth. Once the baby is delivered, hormones go back to their normal phase which may result in hair falling out rapidly. This is a temporary phase and hair growth returns to normal after a few weeks.
- Protein deficiency - Hair is made from a protein called keratin. When our diets are not filled when protein-rich foods, keratin depletes from our body making the hair brittle. This leads to weak strands which fall out prematurely.
- Medications - Women who are on birth control pills can have side-effects of hair loss if they abruptly stop using the medication. Other hormonal pills and therapies can have a similar effect, including blood thinners, antidepressants, high-dose vitamin A and medicines for arthritis, gout, heart problems and high blood pressure. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy sessions also result in hair loss.
- Extreme weight loss - Crash dieting and losing a great amount of weight suddenly or too quickly can adversely affect the growth of your hair. This is because many of these "crash diets" deprive your body of essential nutrients or ban certain food groups which can then impact your hair growth. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia can also attribute to hair loss.
- Medical illnesses - The thyroid is responsible for secreting triiodothyronine and thyroxine hormones which are needed for proper growth and development of our body. When a person suffers from hypo or hyperthyroidism there is excess or low secretion of these hormones which can lead to deficiencies. Autoimmune disease is when our own body creates antibodies against our own cells and tissues, also attacking hair and other organs which result in hair loss.
- Acute or chronic medical conditions - Diabetes and psoriasis are responsible for loss of hair. Diabetes negatively affects the body's circulatory system. If diabetes is causing poor blood circulation to the scalp, the hair follicles will stop producing hair. Psoriasis is a skin disease which also affects the scalp and hair follicles.
While shedding 60-100 strands of hair every day is considered normal, anything more over a period of time can cause hair loss. If you notice this, it is best to get yourself checked for the possibility of an underlying condition. Your dermatologist may refer you to the use of a natural treatment to aid in hair regrowth opposed to using a hair loss prescription medication.
